The
Independence Conservancy, Inc. is a wholly independent
501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to:
- Providing
active stewardship of lands and waters in Southwestern Pennsylvania
through environmental education, environmental restoration
and community partnerships.
- Preserving
land by acquisition, easement or deed restriction to protect
biodiversity, wildlife habitat, natural and cultural resources,
scenic views, and quality of life in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
-
Educating the public about the functions and values of wetlands and watersheds.
-
Promoting the use of the outdoors as a classroom.
Through
the support of our members, patrons, dedicated volunteers
and project partners, the Independence Conservancy has:
- Built
the JB2 Abandoned Mine Discharge Treatment
System near Burgettstown in Washington County which
removes over 15 tons of iron, 2 tons of aluminum, and 105
tons of acidity from the headwaters of Raccoon Creek yearly.
- Established
the Community Tire Collection
Program to provide economical waste tire disposal options
to local municipalities. Since 2004, we have collected
over 22,000 tires and wheels in twenty communities, reducing
the risk of West Nile Virus from stagnant water in unwanted
tires.
- Adopted
Land Trust Standards and Practices, establishing the first
land trust based in Beaver County. Our holdings include the JB2 Abandoned Mine Discharge Treatment
System in Washington County, and the Solar Mine Discharge Treatment System in Allegheny County. We also hold a conservation easement on the McConnell Farm in Raccoon Township, Beaver County. Additional donations
of land and conservation easements in the Raccoon Creek
Watershed are underway.
- Trained
dozens of local teachers in Pennsylvania's new Standards
for Environment & Ecology, and helped boost their confidence
in teaching outdoors.
- Conducted
Beaver County's first storm drain stenciling program, demonstrating
the connection between wastewater, drinking water and wildlife
habitat.
- Expanded
and improved the Burgettstown Area School District's Outdoor
Education Center which features an abandoned mine drainage
treatment system, fresh water pond, game bird habitat and
water sampling platforms.
- Eliminated
three illegal dump sites in the Raccoon Creek Valley by
removing and recycling over 22,000 fugitive tires and 300
tons of scrap metal and rubbish.
